Urban Kiz is a modern evolution of Kizomba, retaining its foundational steps while introducing a distinctly different technique, frame, and connection. Originating in France in the early 2010s, the Urban Kiz dance style emerged as dancers began incorporating influences from hip hop, tango, ballroom, and Caribbean zouk, giving it a more structured and expressive character.

Unlike the traditional style of Kizomba, which emphasizes grounded movements and close connection, Urban Kiz features sharper, more linear steps, controlled isolations, and an upright posture. The dance places a strong emphasis on musical interpretation, allowing for creative pauses, breaks, accelerations and intricate footwork.

Urban Kiz is highly versatile and is danced to a variety of music genres, including electronic music, R&B, pop, Afrobeat, and remixes. As the dance continues to evolve, new elements are constantly integrated, reflecting contemporary trends and expanding its expressive possibilities. This makes Urban Kiz a fresh and dynamic experience, distinct from its Kizomba roots while still honoring its origins.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, such as leggings or sweatpants paired with a t-shirt or tank top.

If you want to wear special dance shoes, you absolutely can, but flat shoes are perfectly fine.

Yes, our Urban Kiz Workshops are open to dancers of all levels, including beginners. Our instructors provide guidance and support to help you learn and improve. Previous experience in kizomba or any other dance is desirable but not essential. All you need is a positive attitude and an open mind.
